Who may tryout for the teams?

Any girl who will be between 4 and 18 years old at the start of the season is eligible to be on a JC Liberty team.

How and when do I register?

You may register any one of the the following days- May 18-20 or May 25-27.  Registration takes place at the Starlite gym located at 3487 Kennedy Blvd. (corner of Thorne Street) from 6:00-7:30 each night.  We will also have a registration table set up at the Everything Jersey City Festival.

Is there a registration fee?

Yes.  New registrants- $15.00, returning members $10.00.

Are there expenses other than the registration fee?

Yes.  Since this an intense competitive program there are numerous expenses incurred throughout the season.  There is a complete list of expenses included in the registration packet on the forms page of this website.  While it may seem expensive, all costs may be offset by actively participating in the fundraisers we offer.

Do I need to have prior cheer experience?

While prior cheer experience is not mandatory it is helpful to have some background in cheerleading, dance or tumbling.  We will work with every girl to teach the skills required, but in the end this is a competitive team and we must keep that in mind when putting together our final rosters.

What happens after I register?

After registration there will be tryout clinic dates (6:00-8:00 each night):

* Clinics are attended by age

Tuesday, June 1st- 12-18 year olds
Wednesday, June 2nd- 5-8 year olds
Thursday, June 3rd- 9-11 year olds

These tryout clinics offer an opportunity for candidates to work with coaches. You will learn material that will be needed for team evaluations. Topics that will be covered during these days include: motions, jumps, stunts, dance and tumbling. This is a good time to work one on one with coaches, ask any questions and get a feel of what being on a competitive team entails.

Once the tryout clinics are complete, every cheerleader will be required to attend one team placement evaluation.  This is the time the coaches will evaluate the cheerleaders skills and determine which team he/she will be placed.  Team placement dates are as follows:

What do I wear to the tryout clinic and team evaluations?

All candidates must come dressed in athletic wear- tank top/t-shirt, shorts/sweatpants, sneakers, hair pulled back out of face.  Jewelry and/or long nails are not allowed.

Are parents allowed in the gym during open gym and tryouts?

No. Parents are not allowed in the gym as spectators at any point during the tryout process.

What is the tryout process like?

We try to make the tryout as stress-free as possible.  Candidates will be asked to demonstrate cheer motions, jumps and stunting and tumbling skills.  Most things will be done in small groups.  Coaches will be looking not only for how well you can do the cheer skills, but also how well you work with others in your group and how positive your attitude is.

How will I know if my child is on a team?

All results will be posted on the website by June 11th.  Each child will be assigned a number during registration.  That number will be used to post results, along with the child's initials.
